How do I decide what sort of VET course to do?
VET gives you so many options it can be hard to make a choice. It is important to choose an occupation that will be right for you.
Before you make a decision:
- Think about the type of environment you might like to work in
- Think about what interests you have and a training and work plan that sets out a the sort of skills you would like to learn
- Develop a pathway for you to achieve your work goals
- Talk to people who already work in the area that interests you and ask them what’s good and bad about that job
- Find out if there is a demand for employees in that field
- Talk to local trades people and employers, your parents, teachers, guidance officers and Registered Training Organisations
- Find out what skills are needed in the workforce in your area of interest
- Look at the skills that you have and think about what you can contribute to the workforce
- Do a pre-apprenticeship or pre-vocational course to see if you like the occupation you have chosen and get some skills that will help you get a job
- Look for work experience in occupations that interest you.
