How We Support You, Our Student Care System
Our College believes that support of our students is essential. Across the world educational leaders are introducing programs to assist students in developing their pathways to their futures.
The rapid change of our economy, globalisation and the rate of change in job markets combine to produce an environment where young people will need the skills to design their own future and the education and training to support that future.
All students will be enrolled in our Student Development course at the beginning of year 11 in addition to their five academic subjects. It is through this course that students will develop an understanding of the operation of the College. They will plan their course of study taking into account their strengths and weaknesses. Students will spend a considerable amount of time examining possible career paths, the qualifications required and the pathways they may take to access the career of their choice. Even the most difficult of tertiary qualifications now have a number of different pathways through which students can become qualified.
Teachers will work closely with students in Student Development classes to help them achieve their aims. These teachers have accepted a support role, and it is through them that the College will work to provide pastoral care for our students. The Student Development teacher is the first point of contact for students and their families.
The Student Development course will occupy two hours per week. All of you will be enrolled in this course.
The content of Student Development varies from group to group depending on your likely academic directions. We may be advise you to change groups as your direction becomes more obvious.
For example, if you wish to obtain a UAI you will be involved in intensive preparation for the AST, and will be counselled about matters related to university entrance.
If you wish to gain an apprenticeship or participate in the School Based New Apprenticeship Program (SNAP) you will be prepared for that option. Of course many, perhaps most of you, will be very unclear about your career paths. A great deal of time will be spent working through options, making sure that your package of courses is as flexible as possible, and refining the package as ideas and possibilities evolve.
You will also be enrolled in an Advisory Group. This group is the same group as the Student Development class, but operates for only 20 minutes on Fridays. Its purpose is to provide administrative information to students.
An aim of our College is to provide you with the best possible chance of completing Year 12, and then to provide you with the support to gain the best possible Year 12 Certificate.
