Student Services

There are two key areas of student support in the College which work closely together but which have different roles.

Student Records

Student Records is responsible for student enrolment, course enrolment, course package advice, scores and for maintaining computerised data on students.

Student Support

The Student Support team comprises an Executive Teacher, the Student Counsellor, Year 11 and Year 12 co-ordinators, the Careers Advisers/Work Experience Organiser and a part-time Chaplain.

Their roles include:
  • co-ordination of Advisory Groups
  • provision of confidential, personal counselling to students
  • assistance with Youth Allowance, housing and Youth Services
  • assistance to students who are living away from home
  • assistance with learning difficulties or difficulties adjusting to College
  • assistance with study skills and personal organisation
  • assistance with resolving disputes and acting as a student advocate where needed
  • help in organising special consideration as a result of illness or family situations
  • referring students to a range of outside agencies for additional support and assistance as needed (eg in cases of homelessness, substance abuse, pregnancy)
  • provision of advice about careers and post College courses whether at university or at a training institution
  • organisation of work experience
  • management of student attendance records and leave provisions.
Attendance

If you miss a class for some reason, then the next time you are in class, it is mandatory to inform your teacher as to why and follow this up with a note or medical certificate. The teacher will decide whether or not the reason is acceptable. If it is not then you will be marked absent on the roll. Generally a doctor’s certificate will be accepted as a reasonable excuse for an absence.

If you have more than 3 unacceptable absences in a term (6 in a semester), your parents will be sent a letter advising them that you may not be assessed in that unit unless you see the teacher involved and enter into an agreement. If you do not see the teacher or do not keep to the agreement, then you may not receive a grade or points for that unit. Parents are advised to contact the College to ensure that the agreement is in place.

Note: If consideration for alternate assessment is requested, absences during the major assessment periods will require a medical certificate.

Illness and Accidents

If you feel sick or have an accident while at College, you should make sure that the nearest teacher is informed and contact the Front Office staff who will look after you. Any student who suffers long term illness or misadventure should see Student Support as alternate assessment may be appropriate.

Relevant Policies

At the College there are several policies which you may need to refer to and which can be obtained from the Student Services office. These include:

  • Attendance Policy
  • Assessment Policies
  • Discipline Policy
  • Drugs Policy
  • Mandatory Reporting Procedures
  • Resource Assistance

A team of teachers is available to support and extend all students (T, V and A) with work in all course areas. Some areas in which they may be able to assist you are:

  • finding materials for assignments
  • getting started with assignments
  • structuring essays, study skills
  • catching up on work missed
  • preparation for tests and oral presentations
  • AST preparation.
Contact can be made through the English Faculty or workshops will be advertised on the message screen in the front foyer as well as on Notice Boards. All students are encouraged to make full use of this service.

Special Packages

We are aware that some students who come to College are anxious about studying at this level. Some have not completed Year 10 while others may have personal difficulties such as chronic illness or parenthood responsibilities. Some students may have specific learning difficulties while others have been in special classes or have received Learning Assistance help in high school.

If this applies to you, you might be interested in:

  • Special integrated package. Work and Society is designed around work-related skills. Work Experience is an important part of the package and there is an emphasis on building group interest, support and cohesion.
  • Mathematics Tutorials may be available for one hour after school to support students in tertiary classes.
  • Enrichment English is available for students with the opportunity to complete extension activities and practise skills relevant to English. Students meet in groups at a time negotiated with the teacher(s).
  • Special packages exist under certain rules for students over 18, part-time students and students wishing to defer. Contact Student Records for information.

We wish to give the year 12's a gentle reminder.  It is very important you double-check your academic package carefully with your AG teacher during your interview in Week 1.  Please ensure you are on track with your Year 12 Certificate.  A general guide for you to go by, is that you currently have at least 10 points towards your Year 12; that you will have the appropriate majors/minors and; that you are enrolled in the correct units for this term/semester.
