Positive Education at LTC

What is Positive Psychology?

Positive Psychology is the scientific investigation of factors and processes that facilitate a worthwhile life - one that is pleasurable, engaging and purposeful (Australian Psychological Society, 2016). Positive Education involves the teaching of the skills of wellbeing and the skills of achievement and this is facilitated through the use of the Model for Positive Education developed by Geelong Grammar in consultation with Professor Martin Seligman and colleagues from the University of Pennsylvania. The aim of Positive Education is to transform schools into places where characteristics such as empathy, optimism, creativity, self-efficacy and resilience are identified, appreciated and cultivated (Australian Psychological Society, 2016).

Why Positive Psychology?

Increasing statistics on psychological distress and mental illness in our children and adolescents, and the realisation of the need to take a more proactive rather than reactive approach to mental health precipitated the need to develop students in a more holistic way, with a stronger focus on wellbeing. Therefore, Lake Tuggeranong College has a duty of care to educate our students on the research and application of wellbeing and implement interventions aimed at increasing the optimal functioning of our students and staff.

Review of early data from research into the effects of Positive Psychology Interventions (PPIs) revealed that PPIs do significantly increase wellbeing and decrease depressive symptoms (Australian Psychological Society, 2016).

For these reasons, the School Leadership team, in response to the inclusion of “Thrive” as central to Lake Tuggeranong’s vision, has committed to implementing and integrating Positive Education in all aspects of LTC’s community. Therefore, a commitment to Positive Education has been formalised through the current Strategic Plan. This will see the commitment to providing our young people, staff and families the skills to live a life worthwhile, continue through to 2020.
