The use of computers in the accounting process is an integral part of this course and you will gain experience in using a commercial accounting package as well as spreadsheets. You will also gain a worthwhile understanding of the workings and organisation of business. Similarly, if you wish to study Accounting at university, this course will provide an excellent foundation. Students completing units in this course will receive Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) at CIT.
This course will be offered as a MINOR only in 2008. Students will be able to combine a MINOR in Accounting (T) and a MINOR in Business Management (T) to form MAJOR in Commerce (T). This means that students will have to complete a full year of study in each of the two courses (Accounting AND Business Management) to be eligible for a Major in Commerce.
Business Management (T)
The Business Management course has a strong practical orientation and covers the application of principles of management to such matters as a business plan, marketing, financial control, human resource management and industrial relations. It combines a number of areas of study such as economics, law, marketing, accounting and management, in relation to the business sector of our society. This course incorporates several excursions so that you experience real life case studies of how business and the financial sector operate. This course provides excellent preparation for tertiary Business, Economics and Commerce courses at both University and CIT. It also provides an excellent opportunity to develop important skills for life and the work place. During many of the industry visits that take place, you will become aware of the variety of occupations that are available and qualifications and attributes that are required.
Business Administration (A/V)
Business Administration (A/V) is a Vocational course designed to train you to achieve essential competencies/skills that are nationally recognised by all employers and trainers. Competencies gained through Business Administration are transferable to several other courses at CIT, shortening the length of courses for example Marketing and Sport and Recreation. You can achieve a Certificate 1 in Business and a Certificate II in Business in your first year of study. Over a two-year period, you are also able to achieve additional competencies from the Certificate III in Business qualification. If you are unable to complete all competencies for the particular certificate you are still able to receive a statement of attainment listing those competencies that you have successfully demonstrated. This very versatile course will help you to develop your computing skills and address the requirements of a career in administration leading to career paths in areas such as marketing, business and events management. It will also give you the necessary skills to prepare/present assignments at college and tertiary level. You will learn to touch type and use the Microsoft Suite of applications e.g. Word, Spreadsheets, Outlook, Publisher, Power point, Databases, Explorer etc.
You may undertake two one week Structured Work Placements during school time with different employers, in order to gain industry experience. If you are a student with a tertiary package, you will be encouraged to go on Work Placement in Work Experience week at the end of the Semester. Work Placements have lead to holiday jobs and full time employment, including traineeships. References received from employers provide an excellent addition to any portfolio. Recognition of current competencies can also be arranged and as a Registered Training Organisation we will honour qualifications and statements of attainment issued by other Registered Training Organisations.

This provides an opportunity for students to further develop their business and entrepreneurial skills in a simulated environment that mirrors the operation of a real business.
