Information Technology (A) This course is designed for students undertaking an A package. It provides an overview of computer technology including document production, spreadsheet and database packages, graphics packages, web and multimedia.

The course is designed so that it is possible for students to move into the Information Technology (T/V) course early in Year 11 if they feel they can cope with the higher level of work.

Information Technology (T/V)

This course is designed for a broad range of students, from those who wish to go on to programming or computer engineering, work on developing websites, design games, through to hardware support and to those who just want to get a general overview of emerging applications in this field.

The course has 2 main streams, the Programming stream and the Applications stream.

The Applications stream places an emphasis on Web and database applications. Databases hold the information and the Web is the tool for accessing it, we believe that students with a solid grounding in these applications will find them broadly applicable to nearly all areas of life after college be it further study or straight into the work force.

The Programming stream is designed for those students who intend to progress to the study of the information sciences at a tertiary level. It will provide an insight into information technology and emphasises the structure of information technology systems. Students in this stream may also wish to take some units from the applications stream.

Because the course is also vocational, students may also gain competencies towards a vocational certificate in IT (Cert II), which may give you advanced credit towards units at tertiary institutions such as CIT. Students wishing to obtain the full certificate will be required to complete some units over and above the normal course requirements as well as a work placement. These additional units will relate to issues such as occupational health and safety, which are specific to the V course.

Extension/Support Units

In addition to these there is also an Extension/Support stream. Students from either the T or A courses can undertake the 2 A+ units that are designed for students who wish to develop skills in installing/upgrading hardware and software. The course also prepares students who wish to, to undertake the A+ certification exams.
